Capt. Mike Oppegaard — Native Son Guide Service

(910) 233-8295    nativesonguideservice.com

My family’s ties to Topsail began before the island was developed. My grandparents had a “fish camp” on Old Topsail (Lee Island) before WWII. In 1963, my grandfather purchased the Sound Pier and expanded it in 1969. As a family, we ran the pier until its sale in 2004. To say that I grew up on the water with a fishing pole in my hand would be an understatement! I was lucky to grow up on Topsail when we were just a small fishing village. I had a chance to fish with some of the local legends and work for some great captains. Whether we are catching in the sound or out in the inlet, let me use my local knowledge to make your day enjoyable and fun.

What makes the waters around Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington, NC so unique is the diversity of game fish and water quality depending on your fishing location. South of Wrightsville Beach the waters can be stained with nutrient-rich waters flooding in from the Cape Fear River through Snow’s Cut and providing great opportunities for tailing, backing and shrimp-busting redfish in merely inches of water. To the north from Figure Eight Island to Topsail Island, the water is clear and the bottom sandy, covered with turtle grasses providing a picturesque background for sight-fishing for redfish. Whether you’re an experienced light tackle angler or not we can build a game plan around you! I typically use soft plastics and hard plastic year-round. For my more avid fishermen/women I’ll be putting a topwater in your hand first thing in the morning. Watching redfish or speckled trout coming up to hit a topwater plug on the surface will bring your excitement level through the roof. Then have the opportunity to pole flats sight casting redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. We can even get bluefish, jack crevalles and sharks come into some flats. Giving us an opportunity to catch them. If you aren’t an avid angler I can create a plan to make you successful with live or dead bait. Sitting on docks, certain areas in flats or channels looking for bites.

Capt. Cameron Pappas — Blackbird Guide Service

910.547.9353

Captain Cameron Pappas grew up in Wilmington, NC and have always enjoyed getting out on the water whenever possible. Having the ocean and the marsh so close by throughout my life has made for a lot of time spent outdoors, which I will always appreciate. I started fishing at a young age but mostly offshore fishing here in NC. When I stumbled upon inshore fishing in my early twenties I was immediately addicted. Inshore fishing is challenging but also extremely rewarding. There is a science to inshore fishing that has always kept me thinking about new places and ways to fish. There is also the benefit of just having a reason to engulf yourself in the outdoors. In my opinion there is nothing better to set yourself right than by spending some time away from everything and just being out on the water.

I was taught a long time ago that good things happen if you treat every customer like the only customer. I truly implement this on all my fishing charters and realize that everyone is different with different needs. I will always do my best to accommodate you and make your fishing trip one to remember.

As your hired guide in Wilmington, it is my duty to place you in the right spot with the right equipment to have a day you won’t forget.  To make this happen, I am always on the hunt for the targeted species and will supply my anglers with the industry’s best and most reliable equipment.

We welcome all types of anglers, a fly fisherman looking to sight fish shallow water redfish, a new fisherman wanting to learn the ropes and relax, or a couple looking to do a little bit of everything. We are happy to cater to any fisherman style and want to give everyone a glimpse into what it is truly about.
